Scott Rothkopf: Hola, soy Scott Rothkopf, subdirector y curador en jefe Familia Nancy y Steve Crown en el Whitney.
Esta obra de Nick Mauss se llama Images in Mind. Es básicamente una obra a escala de mural, realizada con una técnica llamada verre eglomisé. Es como un término sofisticado en francés para describir una pintura que está literalmente atrapada entre un cristal y un revestimiento espejado. Al principio, cuando ves la obra, piensas que Nick Mauss, el artista, hizo una pintura sobre la superficie del cristal. Pero en realidad, cuando te acercas te das cuenta de que todas estas líneas en rojo, azul y negro están por detrás de la superficie del cristal. Y es porque básicamente pintó sobre el cristal, y luego aplicó un revestimiento espejado en la parte posterior del cuadro.
Cuando trabajas de este modo realmente no sabes, o el artista no sabe, cómo se verá la pieza final. Porque en cierto modo no pueden ver la obra a medida que la están creando. De hecho, esta técnica se desarrolló en los siglos XVIIIy XIX en Europa con el fin de pintar íconos religiosos, y luego se popularizó en la década de 1930 en Francia en los interiores de estilo Art Deco. Y creo que a Nick le interesan todas estas historias diferentes.
Quiere que su obra sea algo que refleje al espectador, y en este caso refleja la ciudad. Por lo que literalmente te conviertes en parte de la obra. La obra cambia dependiendo de la luz y de cómo te pares delante de ella. Y los diferentes dibujos dentro del espejo vienen de diversas fuentes históricas. En realidad, él no quiere que uno sepa qué son exactamente. Saberlo importa menos que el tipo de ensimismamiento o ensueño que inspiran.
Uno de los motivos por los que montamos esta muestra es porque queríamos trazar una conexión entre las obras clásicas e históricas de la colección y el presente. El Whitney es un museo que siempre se ha dedicado a los artistas vivos, y estos artistas están constantemente reinterpretando el pasado desde la óptica de nuestra colección y de la historia del arte, y renovando su propia perspectiva para ellos mismos.

Scott Rothkopf: Hi, I’m Scott Rothkopf, the Whitney’s Senior Deputy Director and Nancy and Steve Crown Chief Curator.
This work by Nick Mauss is called Images in Mind. And it’s essentially a mural-scale work made from a technique called verre eglomisé. And that’s a kind of fancy French term for a painting that is literally trapped between glass and a mirrored coating. So when you look at this work at first you think that Nick Mauss, the artist, has made a painting on the surface of the glass. But in fact, when you get up closer, you notice that all of his beautiful lines in red and blue and black are sitting behind the surface of the glass. And that’s because essentially he painted on the glass, and then a mirrored coating was applied to the back of his picture.
When you work in this way you don’t know, or the artist doesn’t, what the piece is going to end up looking like. Because they can’t see the work in a way as they’re making it. This technique actually developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth century in Europe for the painting of religious icons and it became kind of popular in the 1930s in France in Art Deco interiors. And I think Nick is interested in all of these different histories.
He wants this work to be something that reflects you and in this case it reflects the city. So that you literally become a part of the work. The work changes depending on the light and how you stand in front of it. And the various drawings inside the mirror come from different art historical sources. He doesn’t really want you to know exactly what they are. That’s less important to him than the kind of reverie or dream that they inspire.
One of the reasons why we put in this show is because we wanted to draw a connection between the classic historical works of the collection and the present. The Whitney is a museum that has always been devoted to living artists and those artists are constantly reinterpreting the past through the lens of our collection and art history, and making it new for themselves today.
