Floor 6, Sondra Gilman Study Center
When artists deal with popular culture in their work, it can be difficult to see past the simple forms and common objects they employ. This three-session course, held in the Whitney’s Sondra Gilman Study Center, explores the techniques of artists who have responded to advertising and mass media since the early twentieth century, with a focus on Pop artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, and Andy Warhol.
One course session features a visit to Roy Lichtenstein’s studio, offering a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the famed artist’s career.
Instructor: Michael Lobel is a professor of art history at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. His writings include three books, numerous exhibition catalogue essays, and articles for such publications as Artforum, Art in America, and Art Bulletin.
